Practice

Established in 1985, Porphyrios Associates offer professional services in architecture, urban design and masterplanning. The range of our services varies from urban design studies to architectural and interior design.

Porphyrios Associates has an international reputation for excellence in design and has received many awards and commendations. The practice has carried out commissions both in the UK and abroad for major educational and public buildings as well as for office, residential, and leisure developments. Some of our internationally known projects include: the Magdalen College Grove Quadrangle in Oxford University; the Belvedere Village in Ascot; the Brindleyplace Office Buildings in Birmingham; the Selwyn College New Buildings in Cambridge University; the New Whitman College for Princeton University in New Jersey; the Interamerican Headquarters in Athens; the Fay/Rocco Forte Hotel in Frankfurt and the Duncan Aviation Galleries in Nebraska.

Urban design projects include the Town of Pitiousa in Spetses; the masterplan for the King's Cross Central in London; or the new Bay Campus masterplan for Swansea University in Wales. Over the past two years, the practice has been working on a number of residential and commercial projects in London as well as hotel and resort projects in Marrakech, N. Delhi, Jaipur and Mumbai.

Philosophy

What makes good architecture possible is the dialogue between commodity, firmness and delight; a design philosophy which aims at balancing the requirements of the brief (commodity) with the necessities of good construction (firmness) and the expectations of civility and beauty (delight). This has been the guiding design philosophy of our practice and it is in that sense that our buildings speak of tradition always in a modern voice.

Porphyrios Associates believes in the principles of human architecture and urbanism and we have produced a body of work that has achieved an international reputation. We provide our Clients with soundly constructed buildings which are marked by a sense of place. Throughout the design process, from conception to project completion, our Clients' requirements are given full consideration at all times. The design solutions we arrive at are not merely circumstantial and contingent. They are informed always by a guiding architectural idea which brings together the Client's requirements and the professional parameters of all consultants involved in a project.

Methodology

Over the years Porphyrios Associates has gained valuable experience working on a wide range of commissions. With regard to resourcing and the management of a project the practice prefers small, highly skilled teams capable of turning our hands to most tasks rather than larger teams split into watertight compartments. Preliminary concept design is carried out using traditional design and drafting skills. Scheme design, detail design and production drawings and information are prepared on CAD to ensure inter disciplinary co-ordination and to facilitate prompt updating of information for construction. Throughout the design process the practice relies heavily on visuals and perspective drawings as well as on working models.

Projects are designed and overseen by the Principal who follows the work through all stages from initial design to practical completion and beyond. Associates in charge of a project follow the day-to-day design, technical and administrative issues through to completion. A design team is led by the Principal and an Associate and includes a project architect, the necessary supporting architects, assistants and staff.

Working Style

We work in close partnership with our Clients and any associated committees in order to achieve a working resolution to the particular brief. Established lines of communication are drawn up early on and adhered to from inception to completion. Regular working meetings are scheduled and minutes circulated to keep all necessary parties informed of progress. Presentations to interested parties and committees are scheduled at key stages. We work closely with cost-monitoring consultants and pride ourselves on having established excellent working relationships with funding parties, institutions and private Clients alike.

We have extensive experience dealing with a broad variety of agencies relevant to our projects. At planning level, we have worked with many London and County Boroughs as well as with CABE, English Heritage and the Greater London Authority at both officer and committee levels. Similary, we have worked with The Department of Education and specialist areas such as school environmental assessment. With residential and commercial we have successfully delivered designs within the constraints of listed building, conservation areas and cultural heritage. We also work with various international authorities for our projects overseas as for example; the Battery Park City Authority, the Planning and Sustainable Communities, and the Regional Planning Board of Princeton.
